• Kingston Wharves' port expansion to cost US$50m

  The company, which is undertaking the expansion to make room for additional cargo after the Panama Canal expansion is complete, has a two-and-a-half-year window to finish the project, by Grantley Stephenson's reckoning. "For us, this is a major undertaking," said the company's CEO. The project can be done in 18 to 24 months, or just in time for the completion of the Panama Canal - scheduled for the first half of 2015.

• Royal Caribbean building new Barbados port

  It has been reported that Royal Caribbean is to partner with the Barbados government to build a new port in Bridgetown. The facility, which is expected to create around 700 jobs in total, will sit on 100,000 square foot of land – including 15 acres from the sea. Dredging will begin in November.

• Panama remains best connected center

  Panama remains the best connected maritime center in Latin America, according to the Maritime Connectivity Index, 2012, prepared by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The conclusions of the report reveal that this rating is because the country has the presence of 23 shipping companies that move 342 vessels with a total capacity of 1.28 million TEUs, while China, the world’s best connected country, has 1,765 vessels in container line services to and from Chinese ports, with a capacity of 8.96 million TEUs. (i) The Second Work Session of the Executive Board of the CIP (CECIP) was successfully hold by videoconference, chaired by Vice Admiral Frank Boyle, President of CECIP and representative of Peru's National Port Authority. The meeting was attended by the Secretariat of the CIP and the representatives of United States and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines from Washington, DC as well as representatives of Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela who participated online from their respective country. As a result, progress was made in the CECIP Work Program under the Lima Action Plan and the third work session of the CECIP was agreed to be held in person at the Organization of American States Headquarters in Washington DC on November 12 and 13, 2012.

(ii)The XVII Iberoamerican Course on Port Management will be held from October 1 to 26, 2012. Organized by Puertos del Estado de España and the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) of the Organization of American States (OAS), in Madrid, Spain.

(iii) The XII Iberoamerican Course on Technology, Operations and Environmental Port Management will be held from Monday October 15 to Friday November 9 2012 organized by Puertos del Estado de España and the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) of the Organization of American States (OAS), in Santander, Spain
